FOOTSTEPS: Notes of Some Little Issues

Erasmus Huis' bibliotheek verzameling

Dear W,

It's almost weekend. What's your plans this weekend? Hope you'll have great weekend with G.

I also hope the same for everyone :)

Today, I'll try to finish a roman-Indisch novel which was written by a well-known Indonesian writer, Pramoedya Ananta Toer. He once wrote four novels which were called "The Buru Quartet". Footsteps is the third volume of novels inspired by the life of one of the pioneers of the Indonesian awakening and of Indonesian journalism, Tirto Adi Suryo (Introduction, p. 9). Others novels are: Bumi Manusia (This Earth of Mankind)-first volume, Anak Semua Bangsa (Child of All Nations)-second volume, and Rumah Kaca (The Glass House)-fourth volume.

I borrowed this book from Erasmus Huis Library.

Well, while I have been reading this novel of Jejak Langkah (Footsteps), I found some words which-perhaps it's not important things :p-are not really related to the main idea of the story. I called them as some little issues. Here they are! :)

"  Betawi was not as busy as Surabaya. And so clean. Big wooden rubbish bins stood in apporiate places and the people placed their garbage there. Not like Surabaya. And there were little parks everywhere, their brightly colored flowers adding a touch of festivity." (p.17-18)

"     In Surabaya all you ever saw were bamboo-hut slums and fires, and rubbish everywhere." (p.18)

"It was the same with the Europeans. Once they arrived here they were forced to take concubines. But the Dutch were also known to be really stingy. They wanted to return to Holland as wealthy people. So many of them didn't want to take concubines. As replacement for a mistress, they made the guling-a mistress that can't fart. Hey, you, Kleooo-have you ever come across a mention of the guling in any of javanese literature you have read? No, you haven't. And you, Sutan, what about in Malay literature? A big zero. It just didn't exist. It was a pure Dutch invention-the mistress that doesn't fart-'A Dutch Wife.'..." (p.54)

"....The two of us swung around to face the street. There appeared a big four-wheeled box, which stopped in front of the house.
     "An automobile!" I shouted exactly.
Immediately we both descended the front steps and headed for the horseless carriage. But before we made it to the gate, the car was surrounded by people. It was shaped like normal carriage, except there were no horses. It's wheels were made from wood. It's hood was folded back. Smoke and dust were still spewing out of the back." (p.221)

"     He asks for smaller print. He is a true Dutchman, not a native. He does not know that the natives cannot afford to buy spectacles. Many Priyayi are forced to retire at forty-five and cannot afford to buy them." (p.241)

Source: Internet

"     "Three strong teas, please! Will the chicken be long?"
"Maybe another hour, Ndoro."                         " (p.283)
"     He left and straightaway the grilled chicken arrived, golden brown and glistening in oily kecap. And out of the holes left by the skewers wafted the most mouthwatering smell, an aroma more wondrous than could ever come from any incense." (p.287)
"     And three chickens, which two hours before had still been running about on their own two feet, still tidying up their ruffled feathers, still competing with their fellow roosters, now dissappeared, destroyed, dissoveld in our mouths among the glistening kecap and saliva, then to descend our throats to meet the waiting worms in our stomachs." (p. 289)

Source: Internet

"...Shoes are nothing but a means to protect your feet from broken glass, sharp stones, and dog shit. Wearing shoes is not the same thing as becoming European or Christian. They are not symbol of how close you are to Dutch authorities, so the native rulers do not need to be offended and infuriated when they see another Native wearing shoes...." (p. 348)
"...the shoe shops were besieged by young people wanting to buy shoes. And so Bandung was full of youths defiantly striding the streets in their new shoes,..." (p.349)

Hmm, so those 'nowadays things' for us in this modern era were not such ordinary ones in the past of Indisch: the condition, the way people see it, the process, etc. For me, those little issues I rewrote above are some unique description which made me smile a bit when visualized them in my mind.

Time to continue reading the last pages!

Hope to hear from you, W,...one day...

Let Me Stay

Thursday, September 04, 2014 0 Comments
Dear W,

It has been almost 3 months since you decided not to talk to me properly like we used to do.
It's not easy for me to bring you everyday in my mind, especially in my heart, still....
I don't understand why this connection is so strong.
I know that you said it's just because I am still keeping hope.
I know I do though I don't want to and you urge me to move on, like you are doing now with her.
It's just naturally happened...or it's also because you still thinking of me a bit silently....Only God knows and decide what would happen to us.
I know that I have my own control but my heart just goes on you.

W, the best thing I do now is I am trying all I can to give my life in God's willing. God knows the best for us.
Let this matter go, forget, non-attached, and give it to God.

W, if you are my destiny, I pray everyday that you'll be back to me. If not, hope God will turn this feeling off, gives me sincere heart, strong soul, and then replace you with somebody who is much better than you.
Well, hope you are the one.

W, come back and let me stay.....
Knuffel voor G.

W, it's time for me to continue my life and to start working on myself to be better person.
One more step, I'm quite sure I'll find the true one for me if I keep searching with my patient and believe in God. I'll give it all to the best scenario from God.

I must do some changes in my view of life.
I won't change what I have for you but just transform it and place it to a proper space inside.

I Catch You in My Mind

Dear W,

Yesterday I got a Psychotest for a job.
There's a part that I have to draw a person.
Guess what....I was drawing you.
You are wearing t-shirt and your favourite jacket, the green one.
You are carrying a bag in left hand and are holding a bunch of flower for me in the right hand.

It's one of my dream....
Hope you come one day....

Dear W,

It's been almost a month hearing nothing from you.
Honestly, it's just like so loong time for me.
How are you now?
What are you doing now?
Are you enjoying life now?
Are you happier when I am not around?

Would you come back and stay?
I feel better when you both are around.

A Beautiful Moment

Saturday, 2015

W, my husband, and our little boy, are sitting in that red sofa, playing games. G, our very special cute cat, is sleeping on W's lap, so cute. I am in kitchen, preparing some snacks for my little family.  Everyday, I see W more mature and good looking. I like the way he makes his hair and those blue eyes while he stare at me, our little boy, and G. Our little boy is the most adorable one. He has my hair color, but lighter and his eyes color is blue, almost like his dad.
Today will be a great day for my little family. We have a plan to enjoy summer by travelling to some area around Gelderland. W will take us by car. I imagine the tullip field and laying on beach with the wind blowing on our bodies.

To be continued....

Another Days for Us

Monday, February 10, 2014 0 Comments
Such a short time to say
We might sing the same song
When we met in a way
Nothing went wrong

An old cute cranky guy was there
Spending time with us
Curious about what we share
On those days for us

Another days for us is coming to take us together
Will you make me smile?
Stay here for a while
Convince me that I am the one, forever

Go Abroad (4):Hong Kong, Modern Sparkling City :p

Saturday, December 14, 2013 0 Comments
No plan at all to travel to this city, but well, one day, my sister bought a promotion flight tickets. So, she and my parents asked me to go with them....

1st Day: November 26th, 2013

Soekarno-Hatta Airport, around 23.30 PM
I and my family was enjoying donuts as our supper. Then, we checked in and walked into the plane.
A bit nervous...what does Hong Kong looks like?

Hong Kong International Airport,
Around two hours flight from Jakarta, finally we arrived at Hongkong International Airport (HKIA). It was dawn that time. So we were relaxing a bit while waiting to continue to our first spot. The first thing to be done was buying Octopus Card. It's a reusable contactless stored value smart card for making electronic in online or offline systems in Hong Kong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopus_card). The card can be used for payment of transportation (bus, MTR), buying some stuffs in some tourism spot, rent locker, etc.
Octopus card's price for adult : 150 HKD (value 100 HKD) and for kid : 70 HKD.

  •  Ngong Ping Village
To get there, we took a bus.
Bus S1 : HKIA to Thung Chung, around 13.5 HKD (using Octopus Card)

Arriving at Thung Chung, we found mall and plaza there. Then we were wrapped by morning ambience...breezy morning and all busy activities in the morning: people went to works, kids and teenagers went to school, a couple was holding their kids hands while walking in the plaza. First thing we do was rent a locker for our bags for around 4 hours and it cost 20 HKD.
We were hungry and needed cups of coffee. So, we bought some breads and were sitting at starbucks to enjoy coffee. After few minutes there, we continued to the bus stop or cable car to Ngong Ping Village. But, we were to earlier for the cable car, so the only choice was to go there by Bus.
Bus 23 : Thung Chung to Ngong Ping : around 17.2 HKD (using Octopus Card).

It took a bit long to Ngong Ping. It's situated on higher place so the road was going up. The morning scenery on the way was so awesome!
Finally, we arrived at Ngong Ping. I was amazed with Buddha Giant Statue. But, we should wait around an hour to go upstair to the temple with that statue.

Entering a gate, we were welcomed with some dogs and rows of statues in right and left sides of the path to pavement yard and small green area infront of a renovated temple. So, while waiting, we were walking around, were taking some pictures, and dropped by to a souvenir shops.

Next, we were walking up to the giant Buddha area. Price of the ticket: 30 HKD (include tea/coffee & snacks). There's a museum called Tian Tan Statue Exhibition Hall there but we couldn't make pics inside the museum.

After enjoying sightseeing around the giant Buddha area, we had free tea/coffee & snacks. We could choose 8 pieces of cakes to eat plus a plate of noodle. Yummy!

Time to go back to the city of Hong Kong. We took cable car which costed 94 HKD/person. We really amazed by the view of Hongkong nature from the cable car. The harmony of green, blue of water, ships, building! Awesome!

  •  The Peak
It was just a short moment being here. We took a bus to go there. Arriving there, we were welcomed by fascinating building of the mall. Then we just enjoyed the water play in a small water feature in front yard of the mall for few minutes while I captured it with my pocket camera.
" We should enter the queueu line for the cable car! come on!", my Dad's said to me. Oh well, in hurry, because my family waiting for me, I entered the line with them. It was such a quite long line! The breezwe was so cold! I suggest to wear thick clothes or jacket when you visit The Peak in the evening. Brrrrr!!

2nd Day: November 27th, 2013
  •  Flower Market & Bird Market
Before going to Disnyeland, my sister wanted to drop by to take walk around The Flower Market at Flower Market Road, Prince Edward, Kowloon. It was early in the morning when the stores just started opening. While walking in pedestrian infront of the stores, our eyes were
astonished by the beauty of the flowers.
Near the flower market area, there's Bird Market at Yuen Po Street, Prince Edward, Kow Loon. The market is situated in the corner of the street. My sister was so curious to go inside so she and my Dad got inside into the market while I and Mom were just waiting  outside, around the entrance.

  •  Disneyland
We were spending all day long enjoying many venues in this amusement park. It is closed at 8.00 pm with the amazing fantastic show of fireworks. I suggest to buy the ticket at travel agent or money changer because it's cheaper. I and family could get the ticket with price 420 HKD per person.

3rd Day: November 28th, 2013
  •  Ocean Park
4th Day: November 29th, 2013
  •  Macau
